See ~~JBAS-4934~~. A very minor optimization opens up the potential for introducing bugs.

There are no known EAP failures caused by this code usage, but testing with a possible upgrade to JBoss Cache showed how the usage could cause problems when small changes were made in JBC.

Reopening. The issue should be fixed in 4.2 CP02 as well.

Fixed with the 4.3->4.2 merge.
